Neighborhood Greening Projects
Gateway Greening gardens improve the appearance of neighborhoods, inspire, educate, and reflect the pride of the participants — often becoming community focal points and catalysts for neighborhood improvement.

Each year we select several community gardening projects to be developed. These gardens take many shapes including community vegetable gardens, tree and shrub beds, native plantings, perennial beds, street entrance designs, sidewalk/window box gardens, or any other innovative designs created by your neighborhood group, association or block unit.
Successful community gardens start with the neighborhood group. Gateway Greening selects groups that:
- provide volunteer support and the necessary labor to maintain the project, including planting, watering, weeding, etc. throughout the season and in coming years;
- create a project with visible impact on the neighborhood and to passers-by;
- coordinate with other neighborhood initiatives to create a project which is cohesive with other improvement plans;
- develop a realistic plan; and
- ensure that the project be self-sufficient by the end of the season.
Gateway provides resources to greening groups, including:
- assistance with project planning and coordination;
- plant materials;
- soil amendments and mulch;
- technical assistance such as educational workshops on garden care, landscaping principles, watering and plant maintenance; and
- on-going support provided by Master Gardeners.
